Classroom overheating
is a solved problem.

External solar shading eliminates classroom overheating. Blackout blinds make AV rooms and boarding accommodation function properly. We install in holiday periods, so your teaching year is not disrupted.

The Problem

Overheated classrooms
affect learning.

The evidence on classroom temperature and academic performance is well established. CIBSE guidance and BB93 both acknowledge that temperatures above 28°C significantly impair concentration and performance. The problem is most acute in south and west-facing classrooms with large glazed areas — common in 1960s–80s school buildings and newer architect-designed facilities alike.

Internal blinds reduce glare but do little for heat — the solar energy has already passed through the glass by the time it reaches a blind. External solar shading intercepts solar radiation before it enters the building. The difference in internal temperature can be 5–10°C.

The Solution

External shading works.
Internal blinds don't.

We install external roller screens, adjustable louvre systems and external Venetian blinds to school buildings of all ages. For listed buildings and heritage structures, we have experience with sympathetic installations that satisfy planning requirements.

All external shading products are specified with full performance data. Where required, we provide documentation for compliance with Part O overheating regulations, BREEAM assessments and local authority planning applications.

What We Install

The full range for
school environments.

External Roller Screens

The most cost-effective external shading solution for standard classroom windows. Manual or motorised. Particularly effective on south and west-facing elevations. Robust aluminium guide channels withstand the demands of a school environment.

Adjustable Louvre Systems

Motorised aluminium louvre blades allow fine control of light and heat. Better performance than roller screens on elevations that receive light throughout the day. Often specified for newer school buildings with large curtain-wall facades.

Blackout Roller Blinds

For AV rooms, sixth form study areas and boarding accommodation. Chain-operated or motorised. All fabrics fire-rated to BS EN 13501 as standard for commercial and educational environments. Easy to clean and maintain.

BB93 Acoustic Compliance

Window treatment specification must not compromise the acoustic performance of a classroom. We are familiar with BB93 requirements and specify accordingly. Heavy interlined curtains for music rooms and drama studios where additional sound absorption is beneficial.

Boarding Accommodation

Blackout curtains and blinds for pupil bedrooms. FR-rated fabrics as standard. Motorisation optional. We install new and replace existing in blocks, working efficiently through holiday periods to cause minimum disruption.

Historic School Buildings

Many independent schools occupy listed buildings. We have experience specifying external shading that has received planning consent in sensitive environments. MicroLouvre® is particularly suitable where a minimal visual impact is required.
